Forty Hadiths about the excellence of the Glorious Qur'an: (First Part)

Exclusive: Alukah network

(1) It was authentically reported in Sahih Ibn Hibban on the authority of Abu Shurayh Al Khuza`y (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came out to us and said: Have glad tidings! Have glad tidings! Do you bear witness that there is no god but Allah and I am His Messenger? They said: Yes. He said: Verily one end of this Qur'an is in the hand of Allah and another end is in your hands, so hold firm with it. Adhere to it for you will not be destroyed and you will never go astray after [receiving] it."[1]

(2) `Imran ibn Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that he passed by a reciter of the Qur'an. He recited and begged of men. So, he (`Imran ibn Husayn) said: "Inna lillahi wa inna Ilayhi Raji`un" [verily, we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return]. I heard the Messenger of Allah(peace be upon him) saying: He who recites the Qur'an must petition Allah with it, for soon such people will come who will recite the Qur'an and beg of people."[2]

(3) Jabir ibn `Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came to us while we were reciting the Qur'an, and there were among us bedouins and the non-Arabs. He said: Recite, all is well. In the near future there will appear people who will straighten it (the Qur'an) as an arrow is straightened. They will recite it quickly and not slowly (or it means that they will get the reward in this world and not in the Hereafter)."[3]

(4) Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) told me that when it is the Day of Judgment, Allah will manifest Himself to His Servants so that He would judge among them, and all nations shall be kneeling down on their knees. The first summoned shall be the man who memorized the Qur'an by heart, a man who was killed in the cause of Allah, and a man who had abundant properties. Allah, the exalted, shall say to the reciter of the Qur'an: O My servant, have not I revealed to my Prophet to instruct you? The man shall say: Yes, O Lord. Allah Shall say: What did you do with what I had taught you? The man shall say: O Lord, I was reciting it day and night. Allah shall say: You are telling lies. The angels also shall say to him: You are telling lies. Nay, rather, you wanted to be said: "So and so is a reciter of the Qur'an," and so it was said. Then a possessor of property shall be brought and Allah shall say to him: O My Servant? Have I not sufficed you and you were in no need to anyone? And the man shall say: Yes, O Lord. Allah shall say: What did you do with what I had given to you? And he shall say: I used to maintain the ties of kinship and give in charity. And Allah shall say: You are telling lies. And angels shall say to him: You are telling lies. Nay, rather, you desired that it be said: "So and so is generous," and that was said. A man who had been killed will be brought before Allah and Allah shall say: O My Servant, why were you killed? And the man shall say: O Lord, I was commanded by Jihad in Your Cause, and so I did until I was killed. And Allah, the Most High, shall say: You are telling lies. And angels shall say to him: You are telling lies. Nay, rather, you desired it be said: "So and so is courageous," and so it was said. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stroke my knees saying: O Abu Hurayrah, those three types of people shall be the first to be burnt in Hell-Fire on the Day of Recompense."[4]

(5) Abu Sa`id Al Khudry (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that a man came to him and said: Advise me. He said: You ask me about something which I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) before. I advise you with fearing Allah, for it is the head of everything. Keep to Jihad, for it is the monkhood of Islam. And keep to the mention of Allah and to the recitation of the Qur'an, for it is your soul in the sky and your mention on earth."[5]

(6) Abu Malik Al Ash`ary (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Cleanliness is half of faith, Al Hamdu Liliah (Praise be to Allah) fills the scale, Subhana Allah [Glory be to Allah] and Al Hamdulillah [praise be to Allah] fill what is between heavens and the earth. Salah is a light, and charity is proof (of one's faith). Endurance is a brightness and the Glorious Qur'an is a proof on your behalf or against you. Every person departs; he either ransoms it or puts it into perdition."[6]

(7) Abu Musa Al Ash`ary (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The example of him (a believer) who recites the Qur'an is like that of a citron which tastes good and smells good. And he (a believer) who does not recite the Qur'an is like a date which is good in taste but has no smell. And the example of a dissolute wicked person who recites the Qur'an is like the Rayhanah (sweet basil) which smells good but tastes bitter. And the example of a dissolute wicked person who does not recite the Qur'an is like the colocynth which tastes bitter and has no smell."[7]

(8) `Abdullah ibn Mas`ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah will have a reward. And that reward will be multiplied by ten. I do not say that Alif-Lam-Mim is one letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter."[8]

(9) Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Allah has His own people among mankind. They said: O Messenger of Allah, who are they? He said: The people of the Qur'an, the people of Allah and those who are closest to Him."[9]

(10) Abu Umamah Al Bahily (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saying: "Recite the Qur'an, for on the Day of Resurrection it will come as an intercessor for those who recite It. Recite the two bright ones, Al Baqarah and Surah Al `Imran, for on the Day of Resurrection they will come as two clouds or two shades, or two flocks of birds in ranks, pleading for those who recite them. Recite Surah Al Baqarah, for to take recourse to it is a blessing and to give it up is a cause of grief, and the magicians cannot confront it. (Mu`awiyah said: It has been conveyed to me that here Batala means magicians.) "[10]

(11) Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Would any one of you like, when he returns to his family, to find there three large, fat, pregnant she-camels? We said: Yes. Upon this he said: Three Ayahs that one of you recites in his Salah are better for him than three large, fat, pregnant she-camels."[11]

(12) `Uthman ibn `Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The best among you those who learn the Qur'an and teach it."[12]
In another narration of Al Bukhari: `Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "The most superior among you (Muslims) are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it."

(13) Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "The best of you is one who learns the Qur'an and teaches it."[13]

(14) `Abdullah ibn `Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "It shall be said to the reciter of the Qur'an: Recite and ascend (in ranks) as you used to recite when you were in the world. Your rank will be at the last Ayah you recite."[14]

(15) Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "On the Day of resurrection the man of the Qur'an (who is devoted to it deeply) will come and the Qur'an will say: O Lord! Let him have a pair of garments. He will be made to wear a crown of honor. It will say: O Lord, increase it. So he will be made to wear a robe of honor. Then it will say: O Lord, be pleased with him. So, He will be pleased with him. It will be said: Recite and ascend (a rank), with every verse a piety will be added."[15]

(16) `Uqbah ibn `Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came out to us when we were in the Suffah, then he asked: Which of you would like to go out every morning to Buthan or Al `Aqiq and bring two large humped and fat she-camels without being guilty of sin and severing ties of relationship? They (the people) said: O Messenger of Allah, we would all like that. He said: If any one of you goes out in the morning to the mosque and learns two Ayahs of the Book of Allah, the Exalted, it is better for him than two she-camels, and three Ayahs are better for him than three she-camels, and so on than their numbers in camels."[16]

(17) Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever does not recite Qur'an in a nice voice is not from us,' and others said extra: (that means) to recite it aloud."[17]

(18) Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) sent a small army and they were a countable number. He got them to recite the Qur'an and each man of them recited whatever he had of the Qur'an (in memory) . He came to a man among them, the youngest of them in years and asked him: What do you have of the Qur'an with you, O so-and-so? He said: I have this and that and Surat Al Baqarah. He asked him: O, do you have Surat Al Baqarah? He said: Yes. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Go, you are their emir. Then a man of the nobles among them remarked: By Allah, nothing prevented me from learning Surat Al Baqarah but that I was apprehensive that I might not be able to recite it in Salah (in Tahajjud) . Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: Learn the Qur'an and recite it. The example of the Qur'an for one who learns it, recites it and stands in Salah with it is like a bag full of musk, its fragrance spreading in every corner. And the example of one who learns it but goes to sleep while it is in his heart is like a bag of musk tied close (at its mouth)."[18]

(19) Sahl ibn Sa`d (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: A lady came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and declared that she had decided to offer herself to Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) . The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: I am not in need of women. A man said (to the Prophet peace be upon him) Please marry her to me. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said (to him) : Give her a garment. The man said: I cannot afford it. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Give her anything, even if it were an iron ring. The man apologized again. The Prophet (peace be upon him) then asked him: What do you know by heart of the Qur'an? He replied: I know such-and-such portion of the Qur'an (by heart) . The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Then I marry her to you for that much of the Qur'an which you know by heart."[19]

(20) Nafi` ibn `Avdul-Harith met `Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) at `Usfan (a familiar place near Makkah) .and `Umar had employed him as collector in Makkah. He (`Umar) said to him (Nafi`) : Whom have you appointed as collector over the people of the valley? He said: Ibn Abza. He said: Who is Ibn Abza? He said: He is one of our freed slaves. He (`Umar) said: So, you have appointed a freed slave over them. He said: He is well-versed in the Book of Allah, the Exalted and Great, and he is well-versed in the commandments and injunctions (of the Shari`ah) . `Umar said: So, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: By this Book, Allah would exalt some peoples and degrade others.[20]
